When this policy is in effect, Windows can cache write operations to external devices. However, when plugging and unplugging external storage devices from the system, consumers must use the Safely Remove Hardware process to remove the external disk to ensure the integrity of the data on the device.

Step-by-step instructions for setting "Better Performance" in Windows system

1. Connect external storage device to computer.
2. Right-click "My Computer" or "This PC" and select "Manage.&ldquo;
3. Select &ldquo;Disk Management&rdquo;
4. Expand &ldquo;Disk.&rdquo;
5. Right-click on the active external device.
6. Select &ldquo;Properties.&rdquo;*
* Some recent versions of Windows may use a different arrangement of tabs in the disk properties dialog box.
If you do not see the Policies tab, select Hardware, select the removable drive from the All disk drives list, and then select Properties. The Policies tab should now be available.

2. Select drive to eject.
3. After the &ldquo;Safe To Remove Hardware&rdquo; notification pops up, you can remove the external storage device.
