When speed and capacity of DDR3 memory reached a bottleneck, and DDR3L could no longer provide significant improvements in energy consumption, DDR4 memory was born. From the figure below, we can see that DDR4 has reduced the required voltage from 1.2V compared to 1.35V for DDR3L. What’s more, DDR4 is 50% faster than DDR3L.

In terms of U-DIMM for desktop PCs, DDR4 looks very similar to a DDR3. However, DDR4 has 288 pins compared with DDR3’s 240 pins.

1. More Pins

The edge connector on DDR4 modules are slightly curved to facilitate insertion. This design also lowers insertion force, as not all pins are engaged at the same time during module insertion.

2. Curved-Edge Design

DDR4 modules are slightly thicker than DDR3 (1.2mm vs. 1mm) to accommodate more signal layers for higher frequencies.

3. Increased Thickness

DDR4 offers higher module density. They contain more internal banks for up to 2 times higher density than DDR3, allowing consumers to enjoy more capacity at a comprable price.
