Lithium batteries can be generally divided into two main types, namely lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion polymer batteries. Compared with earlier nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium batteries have the advantages of being able to be charged and discharged more rapidly, and not have as much of a "memory effect," which occurs when a battery is recharged before it is fully empty.

Sometimes referred to as Li-ion batteries, these are the most mature and low-cost batteries on the market. Because lithium-ion batteries use liquid type electrolytes, they need to be stored in metal containers. The most commonly seen container shapes are either cylindrical or prismatic; however cylindrical are the most prevalent, such as 18650 lithium-ion batteries. Also because of the ease of production, lithium-ion batteries are used in everything from small electronic devices to large electric vehicles.

1. Lithium-Ion Battery

Generally called lithium polymer batteries, these batteries can be regarded as the next evolution in lithium-ion batteries. They use a gel-like electrolyte that is less likely to cause leakage problems, and it can be formed into thinner form factors than lithium-ion batteries. It can be easily made into various sizes and shapes to fit into different electronic products. In addition, thinner form factors feature more surface areas thus better heat dissipation, with thermal capabilities improving as the battery becomes larger.

2. Lithium-Ion Polymer Batteries

You would think that lithium polymer batteries are superior to lithium ion batteries, but in fact, they are very similar in terms of structures and safety. For example, overcharging or discharging of both batteries may cause a certain degree of damage to the battery, which may cause the battery to burn or explode. At the end of the day, when choosing a battery, regardless of type, make sure to buy one from a trusted brand and that meets the highest safety standards. Do not expose yourself to risks of a subpar battery for the sake of saving money.
