When evaluating the difference between SSD and HDD, traditional external hard drives may retain a cost advantage, yet modern external SSDs deliver a comprehensive upgrade in read/write performance, shock resistance, drop protection, and compact portability. External SSDs dramatically minimizes wait times for 4K/8K video editing and heavy file transfers. Moreover, it supports OTG functionality, providing instant plug-and-play convenience for iPhone and Android devices, while also standing as a premier solution for gamers seeking PS5 storage. When shopping for a drive, it is important to choose capacities of 1TB to 2TB or higher and select the appropriate USB interface, ensuring optimal transmission performance and data safety across all devices.

External solid state drives (SSDs) are powerful portable storage solutions that connect to your devices via USB, Thunderbolt, and other high-speed interfaces. They deliver the same fast read/write performance as internal SSDs, but with the added benefits of true plug-and-play convenience, easy portability, and zero need to open up your device.

What are external solid state drives?

External SSDs aren’t just about data transfer, they’re powerful tools that elevate your productivity and streamline your digital lifestyle. Here are five key reasons why investing in an external SSD is a smart move:

1. Fast read and write speeds, significant increase in data transmission efficiency

Solid state drives use flash memory that do not have the read and write delays of traditional hard drives. Their transmission speeds are usually several times or even ten times faster than HDDs. Especially when processing large multimedia files, engineering design drawings or when backing up data; it can shorten the waiting time significantly and improve work efficiency.

2. Boosts productivity

Creators, engineers or professional workers often face the need of reading and writing large numbers of files. External SSDs provide stable and high-speed data channels that support real-time video editing, real-time file conversions and real-time reading and writing so your workflow isn’t interrupted by lag.

3. Energy-saving and quiet, use more comfortably

Compared to traditional hard drives that emit sounds and heat while operating, SSDs make almost no sound and have low power consumption while in use, and are extremely suitable for users who need to use storage devices for long periods of time. For example, laptop users or remote workers.

4. Compact size and easy to carry

The sizes of external SSDs are more compact than HDDs, and most of our external SSDs have lightweight designs. Some of the models are even smaller than mobile phones and won’t take up much room in your bag. They are convenient whether you are in your office, a cafe or traveling.

5. Supports mobile device backup

Many external SSD models support OTG (On-The-Go) functionality, allowing direct connection to smartphones or tablets. This makes it easy to back up photos and videos on the spot with no computer required. It’s the perfect solution for creators who frequently capture high-resolution content on mobile devices.

Five major advantages of external SSDs

Unlike traditional hard drives that rely on spinning disks and delicate read/write arms, SSDs have no moving parts. This makes them far more resistant to shock and drops, meaning your data stays safe even if your drive takes a fall. With SSDs, durability meets peace of mind.

ADATA has many external SSDs that have passed the MIL-STD-810G 516.6 shock resistance standard*, and have military-grade protection capabilities able to effectively protect against accidental drops and shocks that often occur in daily use. Reliable protection can be provided whether you are capturing, transferring or backing up data outdoors, providing an additional layer of protection for important files. In addition, SSDs have a wider tolerance range for temperature and humidity, and remains reliable even under long periods of use. It can reduce the risk of data corruption effectively, protecting your work and creative output.

Are external SSDs really more durable?

We recommend the following types of users who are especially suitable to upgrade to external SSDs:

Who should buy external SSDs?

To select a suitable external SSD, in addition to speed and appearance, there are also some key factors that you shouldn’t miss:

1. Capacity selection

To ensure long-term flexibility, it’s recommended to choose an external SSD with at least 1TB of storage. For video editors, gamers, and power users, 2TB or more offers greater freedom to manage large files, minimizing the need for frequent cleanups due to limited space.

2. Transmission interface and speed specifications

We have compiled the common USB transmission standards and their theoretical speeds currently available on the market as follows:
